The Challenge

The Ben Hogan Foundation and First Tee of Fort Worth partnered to open their second learning center, located at Squaw Creek Golf Club in Willow Park, Texas. The mission: create an inspiring environment where kids in the First Tee programs could learn and grow, while also serving as a dignified space for fundraising events and donor recognition.

The design challenge was bringing two distinct nonprofit brands together into one cohesive space. The Ben Hogan Foundation speaks to a wider audience with a more professional tone; First Tee speaks directly to children with a playful, energetic identity. Both deserved equal voice. We were also the first studio to implement First Tee's newly established national brand guidelines at a large environmental scale.

Our Approach

Uptimize Design was brought into construction and planning meetings from the start, shaping the design vision alongside both organizations. The unifying theme we landed on was 'write your own story.' It bridged First Tee's 'Building Game Changers' tagline with Mike Wright's inspirational life story. Mike, director of golf at Shady Oaks Country Club, is honored in a dedicated room within the center, and his journey from modest beginnings to a life of excellence echoes the path First Tee hopes its kids will walk.

For the interior, we used vinyl wall graphics to handle the Foundation's substantial written content — large, readable type that holds up from across the room or up close. Playful First Tee patterns and colors brought energy to a space that also needed to feel sophisticated. Custom complementary design elements stitched the two brands together visually.

For the exterior, we designed a metal sign with aluminum standoffs that echoed the building's existing metal roofing, stained wood, and black accents. Both organizations' marks coexist without competing.

The main room set the tone: bold patterns, large readable typography, and First Tee pattern integration with silhouettes of children playing golf.
